Kunda - City of Estonia
Kunda is a town in Estonia, located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. There is a pulp mill , a cement factory and a port.
Evidence of some of the oldest prehistoric communities in Estonia, hunting and fishing communities that existed around 6500 BC, were found near Kunda. This settlement gave the name to the Kunda culture.
The Kunda air base facility 13 km west of Kunda has served Soviet and Estonian defense interests.
Kunda" means "cunt" in Czech and Slovak, leading to amusement amongst Slovak and Czech internet users, just like the name of Ziva Kunda which would mean "a living cunt" if written with a ž instead of z and á instead of a. It is similarly hilarious as the Austrian village of Fucking is to English speaking persons.
Most Kunda settlements are located near the edge of the forests beside rivers, lakes, or marshes. Elk were extensively hunted, perhaps helped by trained domestic hunting-dogs. On the coast seal hunting is represented. Pike and other fish were taken from the rivers. There is a rich bone and antler industry, especially in relation to fishing gear. Tools were decorated with simple geometric designs, lacking the complexity of the contemporary Maglemosian Culture communities to the southwest.
The Kunda Culture is succeeded by the Narva culture who use pottery and show some traces of food production. The oldest known Kunda culture settlement in Estonia is Pulli settle.
